John Bakker

President

After 25 years in the auto industry developing his engineering, manufacturing and leadership skills, John opted in 2009 to give his entrepreneurial side full expression and founded Bakker Technical Services, a niche recruiting and staffing firm with a strong reputation for service and innovation.

Passionate about people engagement, culture and strategy, John has successfully led BTS to double digit annual revenue growth for the last six years with a team that is committed to service based on trust and relationship.

As a corporate leader, his most significant accomplishment was the development of a 100+ person project team that successfully executed a high visibility project & product launch with total capital expenditures in excess of $600M.

Beyond John’s professional work, he is committed to giving back and is actively engaged with several local and international not-for-profit organizations and has served as mentor, advisor, speaker, board director and board chair.

His professional credentials include Professional Engineer, graduate of Queen’s University School of Engineering, and an Executive MBA at the University of Toronto Rotman School of Management.

Cynthia Merkas

Director of Talent Acquisition

Cynthia began her career with General Motors Canada, gaining practical experience in automotive manufacturing while working as a Production Supervisor and Project Manager. This experience, paired with her education in Psychology and Human Resources, have proved to be a great combination, allowing Cynthia to excel in meeting the recruitment needs of the manufacturing clients she serves at Bakker Technical Services. Currently, as a Director at Bakker Technical Services, Cynthia is valued for her knowledge, her willingness to take on new projects, and her sense of humour. While she is dedicated to her work, she also ensures she makes adequate time for her young family and is passionate about health and wellness.

Heather LeBrun

Senior Recruitment & Client Engagement Manager

Heather has over 15 years experience in a variety of human resources services, specializing in resource management and client management. Serving as the on-site Resource Manager, she overlooks recruitment, pipelining, and the engagement of over 15 line leaders facilitating all hiring. She has superior customer service skills which have led to great success with retaining clients. Her solid experience in relationship building has allowed her to engage new business and develop stagnate accounts. She is always up for new challenges and adapts well to changes in management.

Bernice Paige

Operations & Payroll Manager

Bernice Paige has been at BTS Bakker since 2010. Her role, beyond personal direct support, involves managing the Finance Team and overseeing the day to day operations of the Finance Department. Her over 40 years combined business experience in banking, bookkeeping, and as the CEO of retail sales & service corporations remains an asset.

Also known as "B", she continues to be directly involved in group, business and personal life coaching, counselling and support, and remains active in various ministerial positions which she considers her life’s passion. People are what drive her toward excellence.

Bernice believes that the reputation and the flawless payroll record of the Financial Department is the result of great teamwork. She feels privileged to work with a team of individuals who treat each other, their clients and their workers with honour and respect. Although the numbers have grown substantially year after year, everyone is known by name rather than being just a number.

Jacquie Horvat

Director of Operations & Human Resources

Jacquie has been with BTS from the onset, overseeing the efficient operations of a rapidly growing engineering firm, implementing initiatives and executing strategies. Widely recognized as a detail-oriented person, she ensures that all operational and accounting practices bear scrutiny.

Jacquie spent over 20 years working in the finance departments of large blue-chip companies including Phillips Electronics, TSN, Digital, Compaq and Hewlett Packard specializing in contracts; credit & collections; cash projections; audit control; revenue recognition policies; tax compliance and global interface.

Outside of work, she has served as a treasurer for several Durham-based charities and has been instrumental in obtaining federal registration for these same charities. Her love for cooking extends outside the home as she continues to teach youth and children culinary skills.

For Jacquie, it’s about investing time and effort in people in a way that they feel worthy and achieve growth.
